Majority of trading companies also vote in favour of GBD

In January, the majority of trading companies (74%) voted in favour of introducing a General Binding Declaration (GBD) for the collective activities developed by Plants & Flowers Foundation Holland. This means there is sufficient support among both growers and traders, as growers (78%) had already voted in favour of a GBD. If the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV) also approves the application later this year, the GBD will come into effect on 1 January 2025.

A GBD allows all growers and traders to contribute to the collective marketing and communication activities of Plants & Flowers Foundation Holland, thus collectively reinforcing the effectiveness and future of the Dutch horticultural sector. The GBD will be valid for a period of three years, from 1 January 2025 to the end of 2027. A new support assessment will then need to be carried out before it can be extended.

High turnout among traders

Until 28 January, flower and plant traders had the opportunity to cast a vote about the introduction of the GBD. In terms of both the turnover represented by the companies as well as absolute numbers, a sufficient number of valid votes were cast in favour of the proposal in the three trading categories of large, medium and small-sized companies.

New strategic direction

The positive outcome of the vote also provides clarity concerning the level of support for the direction now being taken by Plants & Flowers Foundation Holland. In 2023, a new direction was established, which is being continued in 2024. Sector communication was launched in order to positively influence public opinion of the Dutch horticultural sector. Plants & Flowers Foundation Holland also continues to inspire and inform consumers about the positive effects of flowers and plants.

Application

The outcome shows that there is sufficient support to submit an application to the horticultural sector organisation (BO Sierteelt) on behalf of growers and traders. The organisation will then submit the GBD to the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV). A final decision is expected in autumn.
